At Drew Charter School,
We make an explicit commitment to identify, acknowledge, and dismantle policies and practices that reinforce systemic racism, and to educate and equip ALL of our students with the ability and opportunity to be leaders.
Drew defines Equity as ensuring that all students have the opportunity to realize their dreams and achieve optimal outcomes regardless of dimensions of diversity, particularly race and its intersection with socioeconomic status, ability, and gender.
Parent Equity Committee
The Parent Equity Committee (PEC) will work with the Director of Culture and Equity to support Drew in meeting the goals to dismantle systems and policies that lead to inequity and racism. Members of the PEC will be asked to push beyond their lived experiences and comfort zones as we look to establish a culture of antiracism for students, staff, board and all Drew Families.
PEC members will support, through subcommittees, one of the following areas for resource, program or community development.
Subcommittees:
Race and Racism committee members will explore the role, impact and issues related to race and racism that are reflected in the larger society/community and may also be present within the Drew Community. As such this committee will work with the Director of Equity and Culture to identify tools, resources and/or speakers that can support and/or lead Drew families through facilitated conversations that will help to destigmatize fears and help us to normalize our abilities to have the necessary and challenging conversation about race and racism that foster antiracism within the Drew Community
Culturally Responsive and Culturally Inclusive Curriculum Review committee members will discuss curriculum ideas lead/designed by staff that seek to be additions to the standing standards that do not currently provide greater cultural perspectives. The role of this committee will be to serve as advocates within the Drew family community as we seek to broaden and/or deepen curriculum so that it provides all students with more culturally responsive and culturally inclusive lessons. This committee will NOT be designing or selecting curriculum for staff, but rather will work with the Director of Culture and Equity to discuss how the curriculum is equity centering or equity producing. Thus, members of this committee will be able to serve as champions and be able to articulate the importance for this approach with families across the Drew community.
Equity & Antiracism committee members will work to identify how equity is defined and present within the larger society and the Drew Community. Members of this committee will also explore the necessary actions and language required for families of Drew as we move to becoming a school community that seeks to be antiracist. As such, this committee will support the identification of resources, tools and/or speakers that can support and/or lead Drew families through facilitated conversations that foster sustainable actions, language and systems that both ensure equity and antiracism are lived values for the Drew community.
